Dear Friend—

Today, with your help, Saudi women’s rights activist and PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Awardee Loujain Al-Hathloul has been released from prison.
Loujain and Lina Al-Hathloul
For more than 1,000 days, Loujain endured torture, isolation, and threats of sexual violence. Her family heard little from her. But with your support, we kept hope alive. We demonstrated. We appealed to members of Congress. We sent petitions and appeals to anyone who would listen, elevating her case in the U.S. and abroad.

And today, she’s been released, free to see her family and gulp in the fresh air for the first time in three years. You helped us get to this day.
HELP US FIGHT FOR THE FREEDOM TO WRITE

But the story isn’t over. Loujain still faces draconian limitations on where she can go, who she can visit—and perhaps most vitally—what she can say. Her release is not yet freedom. And until Loujain's sentence is lifted and she can continue her work fighting for the rights of women in Saudi Arabia, we won’t relent.

Help us keep up the fight. Help us remind Loujain and those like her around the world that PEN America leaves no writer alone.

Thank you,
