Some states, including California, are failing to do so, even though studies show people with disabilities are up to three times more likely to die from COVID-19.

In 2016, Democracy Now! traveled to the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota to cover the epic resistance of thousands who gathered to oppose the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). On that Labor Day weekend, DAPL security guards unleashed dogs and pepper spray on Native Americans seeking to protect their sacred lands. Democracy Now! caught it all on video. Our footage was viewed over 14 million times in just 24 hours and picked up by corporate media outlets across the country and around the world.

Since airing this special report over four years ago, Democracy Now! has continued to cover the Indigenous-led fight against DAPL and the fossil fuel industry. 

Today we reported on an extraordinary action by Indigenous youth, who braved subzero temperatures to run a 93-mile relay to the site of the 2016 #NoDAPL protests, to draw attention to the issue and call on Biden to shut down the pipeline. While President Biden has canceled the Keystone XL pipeline, he has yet to end DAPL.
