The impeachment trial of Donald Trump began yesterday with a powerful video — which includes footage not widely seen before — showing how Trump’s insurrection unfolded on January 6:
- We see Trump inciting the mob at his rally near the White House.
- We see that mob storming first the Capitol grounds and then the building itself.
- We see multiple examples of the unhinged violence dispensed by Trump’s murderous horde.
- We feel the chaos and fear experienced by members of Congress and others who were rightfully present in the Capitol that day.
- And we learn more about Trump’s responses during and after the attack, in which he praised the insurrectionists and exclaimed, “Remember this day forever!”
While the video contains vulgar language and harrowing footage, I encourage you to watch it if you haven’t already.
It is important to see just how hateful and violent these Trump adherents are.
It is important to see the extent to which they understood they were carrying out Trump’s will.
It is important to see how close they came — and may yet come, without our continued vigilance — to extinguishing the light of democracy in this country.

P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic. If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
