John,
As former President Trump’s impeachment trial begins this week, we’re reflecting on how Trump’s threats to our democracy escalated into real, tangible damage when his supporters breached the Capitol. It’s never been clearer that we need to strengthen our democracy than it is today.
At CREW, we spent much of the last four years working at full speed to keep up with the avalanche of corruption, abuses of power and conflicts of interest from the Trump administration. And while the most corrupt president in American history is no longer in office, it would be a huge mistake to think our work is done. If you can, please consider making a donation to support CREW’s work.
We need watchdogs like CREW to demand transparency, ethics and accountability from the executive branch, no matter who is in the White House. We need watchdogs like CREW to take legal action against dark money groups, no matter who is benefitting from their massive checks. We need watchdogs like CREW to insist on accountability for attacks on our democracy even when it is tempting to just move on. We need watchdogs like CREW to remind Congress just how important real democracy reform (like the For the People Act) is in the long term, not just as a reaction to Trump.
CREW is proud to continue our work of building a democracy that truly works for all of us. When we took on President Trump on his first day in the Oval Office, by suing him for violating the Constitution’s Emoluments Clauses, thousands of you pitched in and donated—and in the months and years that followed, you continued to support CREW’s work. That support enabled us to keep pace with the Trump administration's wrongdoing, and we can't thank our supporters enough.
Now that Trump is no longer president, we still need continued support—for many reasons. Chief among them, we need to continue the fight for reforms that will prevent any future president from exploiting the loopholes, profiting from the presidency, and running roughshod over our democracy like Trump did. If you’re able, I hope you’ll consider making a donation to support CREW’s work protecting and defending our democracy—we truly count on people like you to sustain our work, now more than ever.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
President, CREW
