Fair collective bargaining ordinance demanded in Alexandria
AFSCME VA is urging the Alexandria (VA) mayor and city council to ensure that any ordinance on collective bargaining be "similar to the breadth and the scope of the bill passed with near-unanimous support of the Democrats in the Virginia House of Delegates last year." They're circulating a [link removed] petition that says front-line employees deserve a say in matters that impact them at work including safety, wages, benefits, and fair processes for grievances. "When public employees have a voice at work through collective bargaining, Alexandria's public services will be strengthened," said the union.
"Way past time" for Raise The Wage Act
"It is WAY past time to end the sub-minimum wage for tipped workers," said Ifeoma Ezimako, during Monday's [link removed] Raise the Wage Moral program. Ezimako is a tipped service worker in Washington, D.C. "This legacy of slavery MUST end. It exploits our workforce that is mainly built up of mostly women and people of color. Living off of barely $2 an hour plus tips forces us to endure and even tolerate inappropriate customer behavior since tips make up the bulk of our pay." Sponsored by the One Fair Wage, SEIU and the Poor People's Campaign, low-wage and tipped workers across the country called for passage of the Raise The Wage Act -- which includes a $15 federal minimum wage inclusive of tipped and youth workers, as well as workers with disabilities - and described how the increase would change their lives and improve the economy. Check out the event's livestream [link removed] here, where you can also send a letter to Congress.
Today's Labor Quote: George Orwell
"The essential point here is that all people with small, insecure incomes are in the same boat and ought to be fighting on the same side. Probably we could do with a little less talk about' capitalist' and `proletarian' and a little more about the robbers and the robbed."
