February 2021 VACCINE UPDATE Today, Governor Polis provided an update on Colorado’s progress in distributing the lifesaving COVID-19 vaccine to eligible Coloradans 70 and older. As of this morning, Colorado has administered: 559,938 first doses 225,187 second doses Vaccinated 279,600 Coloradans 70 and older These numbers bring us 71% of the way toward our goal of vaccinating 70% of this group by the end of the month. Colorado continues to be in the top tier of states when it comes to quickly and efficiently administering the vaccine. Our weekly vaccine supply is steady enough through the end of the month that we can expand the group of Coloradans who are eligible to receive the vaccine: Yesterday, Monday, February 8, was the very first day that Coloradans 65 and older, as well as educators and child care workers in licensed child care programs, were eligible to receive the vaccine. The majority of doses will still be going to Coloradans 70 and older, as this cohort accounts for more than 75% of COVID-related deaths in our state. For Coloradans 70 and older, the Governor addressed concerns that there may not be enough vaccines for every group of eligible people now that Coloradans 65-69 can sign up to receive the vaccine -- or that it will take longer now to schedule an appointment with providers. The State was able to expand the pool of eligible Coloradans because our projected supply of vaccines coming from the federal government is enough to vaccinate everyone in these groups. Like all major public health decisions from the State of Colorado, the most recent expansion of the vaccine prioritization list was carefully considered and based on the latest data. It may take a few weeks to get to everyone, but if you are eligible and want the vaccine, you will get one. The Governor asks that eligible Coloradans please be patient, and make sure that they are signed up with a local provider. COMMUNITY VACCINE CLINICS Governor Polis also provided an update on several mass vaccination clinics that he attended over the weekend. Over the last few weeks, the Governor had the privilege of seeing up close, the incredible work happening at vaccine clinics in communities across the state, and this past weekend, the Governor visited SCL Health’s Clinic at the National Western Complex, as well as National Jewish Health’s clinic at Saint Cajetan's Catholic Church: SCL Health vaccinated 5,000 Coloradans; National Jewish vaccinated 1,000 Coloradans; and Colorado has also previously partnered with Salud Family Health Center, UCHealth, Valley-Wide Health, and many other community health partners to stand up vaccination clinics to serve medically underserved and hard to reach communities throughout the state. The Governor was joined today by Linda Sosa and Rebecca Vasquez, who both received the vaccine as part of the 70 and older population, and discussed their recent COVID-19 vaccination experiences in both English and Spanish, as well as why Coloradans should feel confident in receiving the vaccine. Linda also helped organize the vaccination event hosted by National Jewish Health this last weekend and we are grateful for her partnership in the community. “It was a nice experience and I feel safe now. When I got the vaccine, I didn’t feel anything,” said Linda Sosa. “This is a process, you have to have trust that you will get vaccinated. Thank you for being there Governor.” “My experience was fast, we went to the site once we got the appointment, we filled out a questionnaire on my health to take the vaccine. The only information I was asked was my zip code and birth date. I got the shot inside the car and staff moved us inside with paramedics to make sure I didn’t have a reaction. And then I got to go home, it was very fast and very nice. Thank you Governor Polis for guiding us through this process,” said Rebecca Vasquez. If you are able to sign up online, we encourage you to do so and leave the phone lines open for those who may not have access to a computer or the internet, or who may not be as comfortable online. If you are an educator or child care worker in a licensed program, you should work with your employer to get vaccinated, rather than a local provider. Many school districts have already partnered with local hospitals and will be reaching out to their employees to schedule vaccinations. KEEP PROTECTING OTHERS The vaccine is our path back to the things we love to do: seeing our families, enjoying a group dinner, going to the movies, and so much more that we have missed during this time. Colorado continues to see our number of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations decline, which is very encouraging, but we cannot take this news for granted. Until more Coloradans have received the vaccine, we all have to continue doing everything we can to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
