This week, the President of the United States invented an allegation on national TV that I threatened the leader of a foreign country.
That’s an interesting Jedi mind trick. He’s trying to say I’m engaged in corruption for telling the Ukrainian government not to accede to his corrupt requests.
Here’s what I told Ukraine’s president: he should not take orders from Trump’s campaign, and his credibility globally would be greatly compromised if he interferes in the 2020 election.
That’s common sense, and I stand by what I said 100%.
With the release of the notes from the July call and the whistleblower complaint, the truth of what’s happened here is becoming much clearer. But there are still more questions that need to be answered, which is why we need the impeachment inquiry.
Here’s what we know about this situation: the president has run a highly orchestrated campaign, involving both his personal attorney and government officials, that trades away our nation’s security in order to destroy a political rival. And the White House allegedly took extraordinary steps to conceal this information.
Many of my Republican colleagues have closed ranks to protect the president. Some have just avoided any comment altogether, but the emerging mainstream GOP defense seems to be that it’s perfectly fine for the president to ask foreign leaders to engage in corrupt acts as long as he doesn’t hyper-explicitly threaten the cut off of aid at the exact moment he demands the corruption.
Expediency in this process is going to be important. There is little time left in the president’s term, and we need to have all of the answers as soon as possible. It’s important too that my Republican colleagues understand that the American people are with us in demanding these answers. That’s why I’m asking for you to make your voice heard today:
