Things are moving pretty fast on Capitol Hill these days as Pramila works tirelessly to get big, bold relief to the American people — and she's scored some significant victories in the last 24 hours. In a few moments, we will ask you to chip in whatever you can toward our people-first movement so we can keep fighting and carry these victories over the finish line. But first, we wanted to update you on where things stand.
Raising the wage: Pramila and the Progressive Caucus worked throughout the weekend to secure the inclusion of a $15 minimum wage in the House's pandemic relief package after it was left out — and they got it done. That's a raise for 27 MILLION low-wage workers in this country, and it will lift nearly one million people out of poverty.
Survival checks: Democrats campaigned on the promise of getting $2,000 survival checks to Americans. Yet, some in our party believe we should cater to Republicans by lowering income thresholds and taking checks away from 40 million people who got them the last time.
Not on Pramila's watch. After Pramila spent hours advocating on behalf of working people as she refused to give up, the House agreed late last night NOT to lower the eligibility thresholds for survival checks. But don't just take it from us — here's what Rachel Maddow had to say about Pramila's leadership on MSNBC:
"Pramila Jayapal and her colleagues have been arguing not only that the Democrats shouldn't cut tens of millions of middle-class Americans out of the COVID relief bill — she and her caucus have really led the way to fight for the COVID relief bill to also raise the minimum wage."
However, this fight is far from over. These important victories are not a guarantee in the Senate. We have to keep pushing to ensure that we deliver on what Democrats promised voters: A living wage and survival checks, so we don't leave ANY struggling American behind.
In a crisis like this, we should be putting more money in people's pockets — not less. We must meet the scale of this crisis without delay.
In solidarity,
Team Jayapal
