Let’s be clear: holding Trump accountable for his misdeeds isn’t partisan.
Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush wouldn’t have done this against their
political opponents. Leveraging United States diplomacy to acquire
information about a political rival from a foreign government is a
violation of our core values, and an attack on our democracy itself.

What Donald Trump has done is exactly what our founders feared centuries
ago. Seeking foreign interference in our elections is not just a violation
of our democratic ideals, but has always been one of the largest threats
to our democratic system.

When has it ever been acceptable for a President to act in this manner?
And why are we allowing Donald Trump to run roughshod over the
institutions that have been this system functioning for over two
centuries?

Now is not the time to go home, sit it out, or be cowardly. This is a time
that requires courage, because if we allow the precedent to be set that
Donald Trump is allowed to deny aid to foreign countries unless they cough
up politically useful information, he won’t stop. He’ll do it again and
again, because he’s not fighting for the American people — he’s fighting
for himself.

And that’s why we’re going to hold him accountable.
