John, it's time for the Senate Democrats to end the filibuster now.
The filibuster is the Senate procedure that requires 60 votes to advance most bills — meaning that even if Democrats have 51 votes in the Senate, a majority in the House, and the presidency, Senate Republicans in the minority can still block us from passing legislation to help the American people.
As long as the filibuster exists in its current form, Mitch McConnell can continue to prevent popular ideas from becoming law — like bold action on climate, campaign finance reform, expanding voting rights, and making D.C. the 51st state.
If we’re serious about undoing the damage that the Trump administration left behind, the Senate Democrats must end the filibuster now.
Our country is in desperate need of bold, progressive legislation that reflects the needs of the people. We need $2,000 monthly payments, Medicare for All, student debt to be canceled, a Green New Deal, more funding for our schools, and so much more.
Passing legislation like this is a part of undoing white supremacy and getting our country closer to becoming a multi-racial democracy, but it’s only within reach without a filibuster. And Republicans know that.
Since they’re no longer in control of the White House, the Senate, or the House of Representatives, Republicans are desperate to do everything they can to hold onto power and block any progressive legislation that comes our way — and that includes holding onto the filibuster for as long as they can.
