John,

President Donald Trump's impeachment trial starts today in the Senate where he will be tried for his role in inciting a violent and deadly insurrection at our nation's Capitol.

It has been over one month since a violent pro-Trump mob stormed the People's House while we met to certify the results of the presidential election and we are still dealing with the fallout to this day. The fear that my colleagues and I felt that day and the lives that were lost must not be forgotten.

John, the events that transpired on January 6 did not have to happen. The insurrectionists were fueled by baseless lies peddled by the former president and his allies claiming election fraud. They followed Trump's directions when he urged them to "walk down to the Capitol" and "fight like hell." And as the violence escalated, Trump did nothing to stop it. Only after multiple pleas to call off the mob did he finally ask them to go home, telling them "We love you, you're very special."

It's clear: the event at the U.S. Capitol was a dangerous, violent assault on our democracy instigated by our former Commander-in-Chief. It would not have happened without his provocation.

While Donald Trump may no longer be in the White House, we have a duty to hold him accountable for his dangerous actions. There must be consequences for his behavior, and we must also make clear to any future president that whether on the first day or the last day of a presidency, lawlessness will not be tolerated.

Last month, I voted with a bipartisan majority of representatives to impeach Donald Trump for inciting the insurrection. Now it is on the leaders in the Senate to put partisan politics aside and safeguard our democracy.

The outcome of this trial will have lasting impacts on our nation, our democracy, and the rest of the world. I hope Senators put country and democracy over party.

Thank you,

Kim
