Today, the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump begins in the Senate. I was proud to join my colleagues in the House to vote to impeach Trump for a second time. Now, it’s on our senators to convict him and ban him from public office once and for all.
Though he is no longer president, we cannot heal from last month's deadly attack on our democracy without justice. But last month, 45 Senate Republicans voted to dismiss Donald Trump's second impeachment trial before it even began. And just last year, the GOP Senate failed to convict Trump in his first impeachment trial. They ignored the threat he posed to our democracy, and we experienced the consequences on January 6th. This trial must end differently.
No President has ever been impeached twice, but no President has ever threatened our democracy the way Donald Trump has. He must be held accountable for his role in the violent attack on the Capitol last month. The Senate must convict him and disqualify him from holding further office.
