With the debt limit set to be reinstated on August 1, BPC forecasts that unless Congress acts, the federal government will no longer be able to pay its bills in full and on time—a day known as the “X Date”—in late summer or early fall.

BPC has outlined an  alternative to the debt limit that would encourage fiscal discipline while avoiding dangerous brinkmanship.

Included in the 2020 year-end COVID relief package was a five-year extension of the paid leave business tax credit. BPC’s Ben Gitis and Rayven Vinson highlight how this extension provides an important opportunity to promote paid family and medical leave in the private sector while evaluating the success of the policy.

In this blog, BPC’s Mariette Aborn and Charlotte Houghton evaluate Short-Time Compensation programs, a part of the unemployment insurance system. As the economic downturn continues, policymakers should consider extending and enhancing STC, as it has been shown to stabilize employment and keep workers connected to the workforce.

Neera Tanden has been nominated to become the 43rd director of the Office of Management and Budget. As the United States continues to face an economic downturn and significant fiscal policy challenges, BPC offers questions to be posed to Ms. Tanden at her confirmation hearing.
