Dear Friend,
Last week, I announced the first settlement ([link removed]) that will bring substantial funds--almost $10 million--to Colorado to address the opioid epidemic. Colorado led the way in this investigation and in the settlement negotiations with McKinsey and Company, whose partners engaged in reprehensive actions, including working to turbocharge the distribution of opioids and seeking to destroy documents once the investigations started. McKinsey is now being held accountable.
Since my election as Colorado Attorney General in 2018, I have prioritized addressing the opioid epidemic. Currently, our nation is putting people in jail--on autopilot--and not providing drug treatment to those addicted to opioids. This model is neither effective nor humane. We need to do better.
This settlement is a meaningful step forward and part of our ongoing work in this area. We are now working hard on other investigations and litigation designed to bring much needed funds to address this epidemic. We are also working with local government partners to develop a strategy for responding to this crisis. This important work will take time. That’s why I am running for re-election--to continue this important work, responding to this devastating crisis and improving our criminal justice system. I will keep working tirelessly towards a criminal justice system that protects public safety, treats people humanely, and is fair to all involved.
Together, we will continue working to serve all of the people of Colorado.
Thank you for your support.
Phil
