Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

It's almost October, but Washington has a few more hot days in store for us before it's really fall. Cool off this weekend by catching up on the latest episodes of THE BIG POND, sponatenously signing up for a discounted German course, and checking out the resources we have available to German educators and language-learners.

Our official trailer for Film|Neu 2019 is live! Head over to www.filmneu.org to check it out. We also continue our celebration of German film in October with Films Across Borders: Stories of Water, as well as our celebration of Bauhaus with World Architecture Day.

Discourse around democracy is perhaps more important today than ever - the Goethe-Institut Washington and the European Division of the Library of Congress are pleased to present a lecture by Frido Mann, grandson of distinguished German writer Thomas Mann, on October 1.

Democracy Will Win - An Evening with Frido Mann

The Goethe-Institut Washington and the European Division of the Library of Congress are pleased to present a lecture by Frido Mann. Following in his grandfather Thomas Mann's footsteps, Frido Mann will be giving lectures in more than a dozen cities in the United States and Canada. His visit to the Library of Congress is especially meaningful due to his grandfather’s connection with the library. Distinguished German writer Thomas Mann gave several lectures at the Library of Congress, served as consultant in Germanic literature for three years beginning in 1942, and remained a Library fellow in German literature until his death.

Films Across Borders: Fitzcarraldo (1982), dir. Werner Herzog

Now in its fifth year, the 2019 edition of the Films Across Borders film series - Films Across Borders: Stories of Water - brings together diverse cinematic stories about our relationship with water: how we are drawn to it, how we use it, how this precious resource shapes human society and our daily lives. On October 9 at 6:30 pm, we will screen Werner Herzog's epic featuring Klaus Kinski as dreamer and madman Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald (Fitzcarraldo), who will stop at nothing to build an opera house dedicated to his idol Enrico Caruso in the middle of the Peruvian mountains - even if that means transporting an entire steamship across the Andes.

World Architecture Day: Bauhaus-Fest

After a successful kickoff event for our Finding Bauhaus in the Public Library programming series on Thursday, the Goethe-Institut and its partners continue its celebration of the Bauhaus centennial with World Architecture Day at the National Building Museum. Explore architecture in the Museum’s collections and through talks and activities for all ages, and be sure to check out the Virtual Bauhaus virtual reality experience that allows visitors to interact with the Bauhaus Dessau building complex as it looked in the 1920s.
