The insurrection at our Capitol on January 6th was a heartbreaking reminder that our democracy is not guaranteed. We watched as a sitting president incited rioters to overthrow our democracy in response to a free and fair election.

As I helped clean up after the attack, I felt the heavy weight of what had happened. We cannot treat the January attack like it was something normal -- we have to stand up and hold those who perpetrated this attack responsible. That's why on January 11th, I voted with my colleagues in the House to impeach President Trump.

Today, the Senate will begin their impeachment hearings to decide if President Trump will be charged with inciting the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol. These impeachment hearings are about putting country over politics and holding President Trump accountable for his attempt to undermine our democracy and our institutions.

Now is the time to rebuild trust, understanding, and accountability for our democratic institutions. We have tremendous work ahead to heal our nation's divides, but it's the necessary work we must do for the nation we love.
