The tragedy inflicted in our country by the coronavirus has been compounded by a surge of gun violence.
Even with more people staying at home this past year, gun violence and gun crime rose in 2020, taking the lives of 19,000 Americans in firearm-related incidents. That’s the highest death toll from gun violence in more than 20 years. In Baltimore alone, nonfatal shootings rose 17.5% in 2020.
We can’t go on this way.
Last week was Gun Violence Survivors Week. We must honor the lives of survivors by taking action to end gun violence and ensure no one has to go through what they went through. Will you add your name to mine and call for action to end gun violence in our communities? [[link removed]]
During the last term in Congress, I joined my colleagues in the House in passing a commonsense, bipartisan measure that would increase gun safety and prevent future gun tragedies by requiring universal background checks for all gun sales.
Unfortunately, that measure got stuck in the Senate with Mitch McConnell.
But now, there’s a new Democratic Majority in the Senate and a new Democratic president in the White House.
With new leadership in Washington, we must seize this opportunity and renew our efforts to end gun violence and honor survivors everywhere. Please -- add your name to mine today and call for action tp be taken to end gun violence. [[link removed]]
