Weekly Parliamentary Diary
Dear friend,

What a week it’s been. I’ve never known anything like it in Parliament. The Prime Minister’s divisive behaviour and rhetoric stunned me to my core and I, and many Members around me, were visibly shaken by the aggressive comments designed to cause hurt and fear, and which risk normalising this language across the country.

As the tone of our politics has taken a darker and more dangerous turn it’s vital that we maintain a calm and sensible voice.

In stark contrast it was so lovely to get home to Cardiff and out and about meeting many constituents today, most of whom expressed their concerns over the way in which aggression has been used this week.

I will continue to be your voice standing up for what is right in these uncertain times.

Macmillan Coffee Morning with Julie Morgan

There was a fantastic turnout once again at Julie Morgan's 19th Annual Macmillan Coffee Morning.

It was great to see the community, local businesses and Whitchurch Primary School come together to support Macmillan.

Taking Action on Climate
As MPs unexpectedly found ourselves sitting in the House this week, I wanted to use this opportunity to get on with the urgent and pressing issues that we have been silenced from discussing. Just last week we saw the global demand from Greta Thunberg and our young people, who feel that policymakers are letting their generation down.

I submitted an Urgent Question to the Speaker to ask the Prime Minister how he will take action on the escalating climate emergency. My question received the support of a cross-party group of MPs.

I will not stop prioritising the need to act on the climate emergency.
Questioning the Government's Commitment to Tackling Climate Change

Data from Antarctica suggests the onset of irreversible ice sheet instability which leads to sea level rises.

This is not the future my father envisages when Antarctica 40 years ago and it is not what my generation wants
to leave behind to future generations.

The Government must start to show leadership in this area by setting hard targets for renewable energy. For example, despite solar being one of the cheapest and most popular sources of energy, deployment has fallen over 90% in the UK compared to 2015. This is because renewables do not enjoy the same tax benefits and market access as those enjoyed by fossil fuels.

This must change as we transition to a greener economy.
Labour Party Conference
It was great to take part at what was a very busy Labour Party Conference in Brighton this week. You can see some of the events I took part in below.
Campaigning for Remain in Any Future Vote
Ahead of votes at Labour Party Conference on the Party's Brexit position I co-wrote an article in the Independent outlining why I think UK Labour should follow the lead of Welsh Labour in committing to supporting Remain in any future referendum. The only democratic solution to the Brexit impasse is to give the people the final say and in that vote I will campaign for the best deal available, which is to continue as full members of the EU.

Speaking up for Waste Strategy Reform at SERA Event
It was great to join a SERA, Labour's Environment Campaign's panel earlier this week to talk about plastics and packaging and the fundamental reform that is urgently needed for our waste system.

Plastic is in the arctic and in the stomach of polar bears. The threat to our planet includes dealing with our waste system and producers must take end to end responsibility when it comes to plastic waste and recycling.

My EPR Bill offers the fundamental systemic change required to fix this broken system.
Supporting Remain with For Our Future's Sake
I spoke on For Our Future's Sake panel at their Labour Party Conference Event. We discussed the importance of remaining as full members of the EU for the benefit of our younger generation who voted overwhelmingly to Remain in 2016.
Busting the Myths About Renewables
I also joined a panel entitled: Busting the Myths About Renewables. We discussed how we can ensure that renewable energy is a realistic and affordable option for all households and not just a luxury. A Labour Government will prioritise the expansion and wider rollout of renewable energy as part of our Green Industrial Revolution, which will create a clear pathway for a just transition to a zero-carbon economy that works for us all.

Urging the Government to Protect Orb Steelworks

I have written to the Prime Minister alongside my Welsh colleagues, calling for Government action to support Cogent Orb steel works.

It is imperative that we keep this plant open, not just because of its history as a major employer in South East Wales, but given its enormous potential to support an innovative and growing electric vehicle sector in the UK.
Labour Vows to Abandon Universal Credit
I welcome the announcement made by John McDonnel MP, who this week at Labour Party Conference vowed to scrap Universal Credit.

Universal Credit is a broken system, causing hardship and pushing my constituents deeper into poverty.

It is no coincidence that food bank usage in Cardiff has risen by 52% over the last year since the full service roll out of Universal Credit here, with over 5,000 emergency parcels going to children.

Working with WWF to Tackle the Climate Emergency

It was great to join WWF to discuss the climate emergency and ways in which we can work together to tackle this crisis.

We are joined in the belief that we are the last generation that can do something to avert this catastrophic change.

Discussing Accessible Communities with Guide Dogs

It was great to speak to the Guide Dogs charity at Labour Party conference about the challenges that blind and partially sighted people face when walking the streets, including pavement parking, street clutter and shared spaces.

I support their campaign to ensure that our environments are suitable to navigate for people who are blind or partially sighted, it is crucial that our communities are accessible to all.
Join me Tomorrow to Support Usdaw's Save Our Shops Campaign

I'll be joining Usdaw Union to support their Save Our Shops campaign on Whitchurch High Street this Saturday.

Please come and join us to lend your support for our retail workers and to support our urgent calls for the UK Government to level the playing field and protect the high streets at the heart of our communities.
