Friend,
FIRST: Trump himself admitted to using the power of the presidency to pressure Ukrainian President Zelensky into working with his campaign to dig up dirt on a potential political opponent in 2020. That is textbook abuse of power.
THEN: The White House released an incomplete “transcript” of the phone call that took place between Trump and Zelensky, in which Trump asks Zelensky to speak to Rudy Giuliani about investigating former Vice President Joe Biden and his son. Meanwhile, Trump withheld hundreds of millions of dollars in congressionally-approved military aid to Ukraine.
NOW: A whistleblower’s urgent concern involving our national security was made public after efforts by the Trump administration stalled its release. The whistleblower complaint claims not only that the President misused his office for personal gain and endangered national security but that unidentified White House officials tried to cover it up.
When the President of the United States takes the oath of office, they swear to do two things: Faithfully execute his or her office, and protect and defend the Constitution.
The whistleblower complaint and the call summary provide the clearest evidence that Trump has done neither.
As a co-equal branch of government, it is Congress' constitutional responsibility to put a check on the president, and protect our democracy and elections. And that is exactly what Hakeem is going to do by following the facts and upholding the rule of law.
Leaders in Congress were sent to Washington to act in the interest of the American people. They will continue to focus on their inquiry while delivering results for the people — from driving down the cost of prescription drugs to enacting a bipartisan infrastructure bill and getting a fair trade deal.
Now is not the time to fall back on partisan politics. Beginning a formal impeachment inquiry is about protecting the Constitution and restoring integrity to our democratic systems. Together, we will ensure no one is above the law, least of all the President.
Thank you,
Chairman Jeffries HQ
