North Carolina Republican Party

Friend --

Democrats are pushing full speed ahead with impeachment. They're worried about blowback, and they should be. Another victory with voter ID despite a quiet week at the NCGA. Oh, and one more thing for those of you who came down from the north: Wegmans opens in Raleigh this weekend! While you're lining up at 6am to get into a grocery store (if that's something you really want to do on a Sunday), read up on what you missed this week.

WHAT HAPPENED

STORIES FROM THE NATION

Democrats are getting the impeachment ball rolling despite fearing blowback from this issue, so make them feel the pain in November 2020. POLITICO

Democrats are also pushing for an investigation into the Ukraine situation, but that comes with a double-edged sword. Read this piece to find out why. The Washington Post

This week saw lots of climate change protests across the country. They push they same doomsday messages that were pushed by AOC and other climate extremists (doesn't seem to be stopping the Obamas from purchasing waterfront property). But what are these protests really about? Washington Examiner

Sen. Bernie Sanders - whose floundering campaign is already under fire for his newest anti-Semitic spokesperson - wants to create a wealth registry for his extreme wealth tax. Good luck. National Review

STORIES FROM NC

Remember that story from a couple months ago about the Middle East conference held as a joint event between Duke and UNC? It had some serious anti-Semitic content and Rep. George Holding pushed for an investigation. Let's check in on that. Washington Examiner

NC's legislative Democrats held a master class regarding how NOT to budget as evidenced by one of the largest budget deficits in the nation during the recession. Take a deeper dive into how Republicans have turned around and maintained a responsible budget that has resulted in five straight surpluses. John Locke Foundation

Several states have expanded Medicaid, including some Republican-led ones that are now reaping the problems of expanding the program. With the country spiraling further down the rabbit hole that is our national debt, how long can the government keep funding Medicaid expansion? Carolina Journal

I mentioned this last week and I'll mention it again: go vote in your local municipal elections, and this story about the Democrat-controlled Charlotte City Council and their wasteful spending of your dollars is why. Hold these people accountable. WBTV

TRACKING YOUR REPRESENTATIVES

CONGRESS

Marijuana legalization is a hot topic in politics, especially among libertarian-leaning Republicans. The House did pass a bill allowing pot businesses access to banking with bipartisan support, but we'll see if it goes anywhere in the Senate. Speaking of banking, they also passed a bill to study blockchain technology and NC's own Rep. Patrick McHenry spoke on the floor in support. Both the House and Senate passed a bill to stop the President's emergency declaration in regards to building the wall, but neither passed with enough votes to override a veto.

The House passed the stopgap funding bill last week, and the Senate passed it this week. As previously mentioned, that sets up a showdown around Thanksgiving. The Senate confirmed the new Secretary of the Army and the new Secretary of Labor, Eugene Scalia (the son of the late Justice Antonin Scalia). McConnell also filed cloture motions for four more judicial nominees.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Both chambers are out as they await the court's approval of the new legislative maps, but they should be back in session next week.
