Dear Friend,
It's been a difficult day here at USCRI. Although we were expecting a low number, yesterday’s announcement by the Trump administration that the U.S. will admit only 18,000 refugees over the next year is a crushing disappointment.
The United States’ refugee resettlement program has had bipartisan support in Congress for decades. Since 1980, we have admitted an average of 95,000 refugees into the U.S. annually. These are people who have been persecuted because of their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Upon their arrival, these refugees have found America to be a bedrock of peace, freedom, and stability where they could rebuild their lives.
Last year, the Trump administration slashed the number of refugees that could be admitted to the U.S. to 30,000. Now our country’s standing as a global and humanitarian leader has been further compromised, as the number is cut again to a historically-low 18,000.
DONATE NOW ([link removed])
Our greatness is rooted in our diversity. Historically, the U.S. has welcomed refugees and immigrants, and they have made our nation who we are today. Since 1980, USCRI and our partner agencies have welcomed over 350,000 refugees from across the globe. USCRI strongly believes that reducing our refugee admission to 18,000 will have irreparable consequences—both to our country and to thousands of lives. So we are fighting back.
With your support, USCRI will continue leading the charge in opposition to the administration’s anti-immigrant policies. Every day, we are busy meeting with lawmakers, providing policy analysis, rallying our partner agencies around the country, and letting people like you know how and when to speak up. This is a difficult time, but we are strong and we will persevere.
I ask you to consider a generous donation today so that we may continue this work, which is more important than ever. ([link removed]) Thank you for partnering with us in this fight.
With gratitude,
Eskinder Negash
