You might have noticed I wear a yellow canary pin on my lapel.

It’s not just a clothing accessory -- it’s a reminder of what our grassroots movement is all about.

Years ago during a Worker’s Memorial Day event in Lorain, Ohio, a steelworker from Local 1104 gave me the pin. It’s symbolic of the canaries that coal miners once brought into the mines with them to detect poisonous gas. If the bird died, they knew they had mere minutes to get out.
 
Those workers didn't have a union strong enough or a government that cared enough to protect them. 

But over the next hundred years, we worked to change that. 

Workers organized in union halls and church basements. Americans marched for workers' rights and women's rights and civil rights. We passed Social Security and Medicare and overtime pay and Unemployment Insurance. We invested in public health and expanded economic security, and we grew the middle class.
 
I’ve worn that yellow canary pin ever since as a reminder of how far we've come -- and how much work we still have to do. For too many workers, hard work isn't paying off like it used to, and for too many others, hard work has never paid off like it should.
