Hi John,

Last week Governor Wolf proposed an audacious and forward-looking budget plan for 2021—one that will increase school funding, increase the minimum wage, and lower taxes for working families. Not surprisingly, PA House Republican leaders have already come out in opposition to the proposal.

These are exactly the types of reforms I mean when I say “common sense before politics,” and there is no excuse for failing to pass measures that would undeniably benefit the vast majority of Pennsylvanians.

How the Governor’s plan benefits working families & small businesses most impacted by Covid-19:

  • A $240 Million Tax Cut for more than 400,000 business owners
    • 64% of small business owners earning less than $100,000 will pay the same or less in taxes

  • A $1.5 Billion Tax Cut for 2.8 million working families
    • A family of 4 making up to $50,000 will pay no state income taxes (up from $32,000)
    • 767,000 additional families will pay $0 in state income tax

Day in and day out, Republican leaders have refused to allow votes on critical legislation while forcing through dangerous bills. The glaring contrast between what our Commonwealth needs and what it actually gets was never more apparent than last year, when only 27 of the 140 bills passed by the legislature addressed the pandemic.

As my colleagues and I advocate for a bold plan that will help people across Pennsylvania, the Republicans continue to bury their heads in the sand.

Please stand with me in supporting commonsense progress in PA.

With Gratitude,

Rep. Melissa Shusterman
