Thanks to everyone who participated in our priorities survey this week. We set a goal to have 500 supporters share their most pressing priorities, and I’m proud to announce that over a thousand of you weighed in. I am grateful to have such a dedicated and thoughtful group of engaged individuals on our team!
Based on the survey results, your top three priorities for the year ahead are climate change, COVID-19, and protecting our democracy. I share your concern for these pressing and urgent issues.
I couldn’t agree more with respondents who indicated that combating the climate crisis and protecting our environment must be a major focus. We heard from many of you who agree that “the climate crisis will make Earth unlivable for our grandchildren” and “there are no jobs — and no arguments — on a dead planet.” I am proud that more than half of my legal victories against the Trump administration were about our environment. For example, when the Trump Administration attempted to repeal and replace President Obama's Clean Power Plan with the dirty and expensive “Affordable Clean Energy Rule” we took action and won.
My office also co-led a pivotal lawsuit to stop the Trump administration’s illegal drilling plan in the Arctic Refuge, which would exacerbate the impacts of climate change on Washington and the nation’s environment and economy. My work will continue to focus on environmental conservation and the climate crisis.
Not surprisingly, the COVID-19 pandemic is a top priority for all of us. It’s a challenging time. One supporter summed it up stating that getting the COVID-19 pandemic under control is “critical for our country's mental, emotional, and economic recovery.” My office is successfully defending Governor Inslee’s proclamations in court — including lawsuits from Tim Eyman and others. Additionally, my team worked hard to stop price gougers early on in the pandemic. As a result, I am proposing a bill to the legislature that includes a specific prohibition against price gouging in the future.
Hundreds of you selected protecting democracy as a top priority . Some respondents referenced continuing to protect the United States Postal Service as being especially important. I agree! Before the 2020 election, I blocked President Trump and Postmaster General DeJoy’s harmful and illegal operational changes to the USPS. Their attempts to sabotage mail-in voting and ultimately cast doubt on the integrity of the election were an unlawful attack on our democratic process. As one of you so aptly put it, anyone who promotes the lie that President Trump won the election is “undermining the rule of law...We must not give into them. Accountability is crucial.” I will continue to protect our most valuable American institutions.
Thank you again for your feedback. With your support, I will continue to defend the rule of law, protect our environment and hold powerful special interests accountable.
Bob
