Friend,
I hope you'll join me in taking time over the next several weeks to celebrate Black History Month - and in doing so, let's celebrate the vast contributions that African Americans have made to the story of our nation, while recognizing and committing to how far we have to go in achieving full justice and equality.
Like the rest of the country - the rest of the world, really - I was ecstatic and deeply moved by the history my friend Kamala Harris made as our country's first Black woman to serve as vice president. I applaud President Biden for committing to diversity throughout his administration, and in particular, elevating African American voices.
But when we see these strides, when we witness history being made, it isn't cause for just momentary celebration. It's a challenge to recognize that progress can exist alongside problems - problems of inequity, injustice, of hate and violence.
The plain truth is this, friend, and it's anything but simple: There is still so much more that needs to be done. Our work isn't done until those problems are no more. I pledge to do my part to advance justice and equality - across our economy, our health care system, our schools, everything - for African American Michiganders.
Let us remember the sacrifices and contributions of African Americans not just this month, but throughout the entire year as we all work to build a more inclusive society that lives up to the highest ideals of our nation.
Wishing you all the very best,
Gary
