John —
When the pandemic first hit back in March 2020, New York’s legislature granted Governor Cuomo emergency powers to manage the virus. I’ve had my differences with the Governor, but I believed at the time that it was the right thing to do to ensure our government could respond quickly to COVID-19.
But now, more than a year into the pandemic and after numerous failures and brazen displays of poor judgment, it is time to end Cuomo’s emergency powers.
Click here to add your name and join me in demanding New York’s legislature revoke Cuomo’s emergency powers.
We’ve seen Cuomo misuse his emergency authority time and time again. He has undermined Mayor de Blasio as part of their petty rivalry, exempted the rest of the state from the indoor dining laws that New York City businesses have sacrificed so much to follow, and excluded restaurant workers and taxi drivers from early vaccine eligibility.
Cuomo’s judgement in response to COVID has been so terrible that nine top health officials in his administration have quit in just the last few months, citing Cuomo’s refusal to follow expert advice on managing the virus.
But Cuomo’s worst misuse of power by far came to light only recently when State Attorney General Letitia James released a bombshell report accusing the Cuomo administration of underreporting COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes by up to 50%. This is unacceptable. We need elected leaders who will protect New York’s most vulnerable, not put them at risk and mislead the public.
So please join me and State Senators Liz Krueger (Manhattan), Allesandra Biaggi (Bronx), and Michael Gianaris (Queens) in calling on New York’s legislature to revoke Cuomo’s emergency powers by adding your name here!
