It’s been 151 years since the ratification of the 15th Amendment. The 15th Amendment made it illegal to deny a person’s right to vote on the basis of race, ethnicity, or previously being enslaved — granting Black men the right to vote for the first time.
It took another 50 years until Black women across the country gained the right to vote through the 19th Amendment.
But neither amendment addressed the poll taxes, the literacy tests, or the other forms of systemic violence that continued to deny Black Americans the right to vote for generations — and that persists today.
Our country’s legacy of slavery, white supremacy and misogyny is very much still alive in our country and our political system.
That’s why Ayanna is fighting alongside her colleagues every single day to center Black and brown communities in our organizing, and to advance bold, transformative policies that will tear down barriers to the ballot box.
After the historic victories of 2020 — in Georgia and elsewhere — we cannot be satisfied. The fight for equity in voting and civic participation remains urgent, and Ayanna is committed to ending voter suppression in every corner of our country.
