John,
Tomorrow marks the start of the Senate's impeachment trial against former President Donald Trump.
Without a doubt, Trump's dangerous lies led to a deadly insurrection that put the peaceful transfer of power -- a cornerstone of our democracy -- at risk. That's why I voted for impeachment for a second time, because the sanctity of our democracy depends on there being accountability.
Now, the trial has moved to the Senate. I have no doubt that GOP senators will fight with all they have to obstruct the delivery of justice and sabotage this fair trial. It's why impeaching Trump shouldn't be seen as the cure when his actions alone are only a symptom of a corruption that is threatening the future of our Republic.
We need to heal our democracy, John. It's why when Democrats took back the House, the first bill that was introduced was the For the People Act -- HR 1 -- which will:
• End the dominance of dark money in our politics;
• Require ALL candidates for the presidency to release their tax returns;
• End partisan gerrymandering;
• Expand and protect voting rights, and more.
The House majority passed the For the People Act, but Mitch McConnell let it die on his desk. I was elected to defend the Constitution without fear or favor, and I'm proud to be an original cosponsor of this bill. Will you add your name as a grassroots supporter of these reforms?

We can't have unity without justice. I'm working to make sure Trump's crimes against our democracy will never happen again.
Thank you,
Dwight
