Alessandra Biaggi - Democrat for State Senate

Friends -

I wanted to share a few updates from my work in the State Senate over the past few weeks.

And before you go, if you can please make a $3 contribution to our campaign, it would mean a lot. Every single donation counts — especially the one you can make today.

The Lydia Soto Law
Asthma, as some of you know, disproportionately impacts children, low-income families and communities of color — and there are few communities with higher rates of asthma deaths than in the South Bronx.

Lydia Soto was one of those children when she tragically passed away due to asthma complications.

I have fought for children like Lydia and their families to address this issue, including improving awareness and management of asthma prevention and expanding treatment services for impacted communities across the state.

Last week, the Senate passed my bill, “The Lydia Soto Law,” that will do just that. Now it’s on to the Assembly and then Governor Cuomo’s signature. I’m gonna need your help on this one as it progresses, but we should be proud of the progress we’ve made so far.

Walking While Trans Ban
Since the 1970s, the “Walking While Trans Ban” has been used by law enforcement to arrest trans and gender non-conforming people of color simply for the crime of existing in public spaces.

So I was proud to co-sponsor State Senator Brad Hoylman’s bill, S.1351, that will take a critical step forward protecting trans New Yorkers and communities of color.

That bill passed the State Senate last week as well, and it was a true honor to join with my colleagues in passing this legislation.

Education Diversity Legislation
The State Senate also passed a package of bills last week to address increasing levels of inequality in our schools and to support diversity in our education system.

Here’s what the bills do:

We must always be thinking about ways to expand education diversity and how we tear down barriers that exist in the classroom.

Thank you for reading. I'll be in touch.

All my best,

Alessandra Biaggi
