| Friend, This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the SAFE Banking Act allowing marijuana businesses to access financial services, making it easier for them to operate and secure access to capital. The bill signals a positive shift in House members’ attitudes toward marijuana, resulting from our decades of fighting for marijuana reform. But we are in this fight for more than banking access. While the SAFE Banking Act is a good bill, it does not end federal marijuana prohibition. And it does little to address the devastating harms that prohibition is causing to our communities. The war on marijuana is a war on people. That’s why DPA and supporters like you have led the way in pushing Congress to put people first – and leadership is listening. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer released a statement calling for broader marijuana reform. And House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler announced he’ll hold a vote on the MORE Act which will end federal marijuana prohibition and reinvest in those who have been most affected by our failed marijuana laws. Keep up the pressure: tell your lawmakers to support the MORE Act and move marijuana justice forward in Congress. We worked closely with Representative Jerry Nadler and Senator Kamala Harris on the introduction of the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (MORE Act), the most far-reaching federal marijuana reform bill in history. It would de-schedule marijuana at the federal level to let states set their own policies without interference, use tax revenue from the marijuana industry to reinvest in impacted communities, encourage their inclusion in the industry and support equitable licensing. It would also prevent deportation and provide for federal resentencing and expungement for marijuana cases. Marijuana prohibition is destroying countless lives and disproportionately harming Black and Brown people. The only way to end the federal war on marijuana and begin to meaningfully address the harms of prohibition is for Congress to pass the MORE Act – but we need your help to force them to do the right thing.
