As we reflect on Black history, I am reminded of a quotation from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "We are not makers of history; we are made by history."
In recognizing many of the significant contributions made by Black Americans, we also look to celebrate the achievements that are still being made every day. As one of the largest movements in the United States, polls from Pew and the Kaiser Family Foundation suggest that as many as 26 million Americans participated in Black Lives Matter protests last year. Voters turned out in record numbers to elect the first Black, South Asian vice president of our nation last November. Last month, Black voters and Black leaders played a pivotal role in flipping the Senate majority.
We should be inspired by the past and encouraged for the future. We must honor those that have come before us by carrying history forward, together, through our actions.
If you believe in standing on the side of justice, we must now join with those who work to end systemic racism in our workplaces, in housing, and in our justice system. Together, we learn from Black leaders of the past and hear the Black leaders of today.
I'm committed to doing my part in the Senate and continuing to listen in order to be a better ally. I hope you will join me by doing the same in your own community this Black History Month, now and in the future.
