THIS WEEK IN MISSILE DEFENSE September 21 - September 27, 2019 THE WEEK IN BRIEF Click Here to Watch This Week in Missile Defense Video On Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani slammed a new U.S. led coalition patrolling the region’s waters following the Saudi oil plant attack. He warned the West to “stay away” from tensions in the Gulf. He issued the warning while watching Iran’s military showcase their arsenal in Tehran. On Monday, the leaders of France, Germany, and the U.K. backed the U.S. in assertions that Iran is to blame for the attack on Saudi oil facilities and urged Tehran to choose dialogue over “provocation.” At the same time, they reaffirmed their support for the troubled 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Also on Monday, pictures emerged confirming the newest variant of China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force’s Xian H-6 bomber – the H-6N – has a semi-recessed area with a hard point for a large bomb under its fuselage. It is meant to accommodate an air launched derivative of the DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile. On Tuesday, South Korean lawmakers said North Korea and the U.S. could resume working level talks, aimed at dismantling the North’s nuclear and missile programs, within two to three weeks. They said a summit between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump was possible within this year. On Wednesday, a two second clip of a new type of supersonic cruise missile was released by China days before the 1 October National Day – the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. Showing the clip was unintentional as it was withdrawn and replaced by another video with the two seconds omitted. On Thursday, the Pentagon announced that the U.S. will send a Patriot missile battery, radars and 200 support personnel to Saudi Arabia in the wake of the attacks on its oil facilities this month. Defense Secretary Mark Esper also approved putting additional forces on “prepare to deploy” orders. Click here to read all of the headlines from the week.
