John,
Today would have been Sarah Brady’s 79th birthday.
I am remembering the namesake, along with her husband, Jim Brady, of our organization and my personal inspiration and hero. It is more important than ever that we tell Sarah Brady’s story – one of dedication, perseverance, and hope.
Sarah dedicated her life to her husband after he was shot, guiding him through and out of recovery. And then, she dedicated the rest of her life to saving others, knowing the true cause of the gun violence epidemic in our country: The dangerous combination of weak gun laws and a corrupt gun lobby. Sarah fought tooth and nail for common sense gun violence prevention legislation that would one day culminate in the Brady Bill and create the Brady Background Check system. Plus, she made it her life’s ambition to put the NRA out of business and oust every last politician that was a puppet for the gun lobby.
And now, on Sarah’s birthday, we are closer than ever to ending the evil NRA for good. I can only imagine the pride that Sarah would feel at how far we have come in the movement — and how fiercely we are still fighting for change.
Her legacy is prolific and her drive was deeply personal. It is a story that I keep close to my heart and it inspires the work that we do at Brady every single day. We strive to match Sarah’s passion in her dedication to fighting for others and her determination to turn her grief into change. Gun violence survivors lead at Brady, setting policy that is tactful and multifaceted to address the complex epidemic that we face. And Brady's grassroots activists are led by survivors working in their own communities, advocating for change.
At Brady, we work with survivors and activists, gun owners and non-gun owners, and across the aisle to emulate Sarah’s commitment to saving lives. She is why we take action, not sides.
John, will you join me in making a life-saving gift to honor Sarah today, on her birthday? Your gift will continue Sarah’s legacy of dedication, perseverance, and hope in the movement to end gun violence and save lives.
In memory of gun violence prevention pioneer and my hero.
Happy Birthday, Sarah.
