John,

Happy February! Welcome to our first periodic newsletter.

In this bulletin, we aim to bring you updates about what Rep. Matt Cartwright is up to in Congress and in the district, as well as important political news that impacts us all.

Before we dive in, we want to acknowledge the beginning of Black History Month. This month is an opportunity for each of us to think about the progress our country has made when it comes to racial equity for Black Americans, and where we can go from here.

Rep. Cartwright is committed to making this country a fair and inclusive place for all of its people and will continue thinking about the legacy of race in America. We encourage everyone to continue having conversations about what racial equity can look like in our country.

Representative Cartwright has secured $122 million in COVID-19 aid for schools in Northeastern Pennsylvania

In late December 2020, Congress passed a COVID-19 relief bill that included $54.3 billion for the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund aimed to help schools struggling in the pandemic.

Now, Rep. Cartwright has obtained $122 million for school districts in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the learning of our children and put a significant financial strain on our schools. In securing these funds, Rep. Cartwright wants to make sure that our children receive the best possible education despite the present circumstances, and help all students get back into classrooms as soon as possible.

The City of Scranton will receive a $50,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, small businesses, hospitals, and working folks were hurting economically, and with the pandemic’s harsh effects, these problems were magnified. Last year, Rep. Cartwright fought hard to increase the budget of the Appalachian Regional Commission and successfully brought in $5 million more in funding. Now, the Commission is matching a $50,000 grant from local sources for a total of $100,000 to help Scranton develop a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategic Plan.

Pennsylvania State Republican lawmakers are trying to make it harder to vote

After the stunning levels of vote by mail ballots cast in last November’s general election, Pennsylvania Republicans have been attempting to undermine people’s ability to vote by all means. In fact, a new report from the Brennan Center for Justice shows that “Pennsylvania leads the nation in proposed voter suppression legislation in 2021, with 14 restrictive policy proposals.” Some proposals include: eliminating no-excuse mail voting, eliminating the permanent early voter list, and requiring that ballots be cured within six days of the general election before being thrown out. Rep. Cartwright is adamant that we should make it easy for people to vote, not harder, and thus, finds these restrictive bills unfortunate. More here [[link removed]] .

Republican Teddy Daniels has officially announced a run against Matt Cartwright

Republican Teddy Daniels has officially begun campaigning for the Republican nomination in our district. Daniels previously ran in 2020, but lost the nomination to Matt’s 2020 opponent Jim Bognet.
