Rep. Ilhan Omar is leading a group of over 50 House progressives who are pushing Joe Biden to prioritize recurring direct checks for working families in the next relief bill, instead of a one-time $1,400 payment.
Rep. Ohmar, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Jayapal, and other progressives have said that “recurring direct $2,000 payments until the economy recovers will help ensure that people can meet their basic needs, provide racially equitable solutions, and shorten the length of the recession.”
Republicans have already expressed opposition to additional checks, but according to POLITICO, public approval and “the progressives' push to prioritize recurring payments could drum up pressure on top Democrats in a narrowly divided House and Senate.”
