John,

I have something personal to share with you today. Just over one month ago on Christmas Day, we lost my dear friend, colleague, and administrative assistant of 17 years, Christopher Hoven, after his brief struggle with a non-COVID related illness.

I want to tell you a little about Chris, and then ask you a favor.

Chris joined my staff almost two decades ago, but by that time, he was already a fixture in Congress, having worked for a number of Democratic members. His experience, intellect, passion for public service and tutelage helped me enormously, as he coached so many members and staff over the years.

For more than 30 years working on Capitol Hill, Chris was a trailblazer for the LGBTQ community, helping to found the LGBTQ Staff Association and mentoring countless LGBTQ staff seeking to begin or advance their careers. His door was always open for a meeting with an intern who wanted to learn the ropes or a new scheduler overwhelmed by their tasks, and with his trademark humor, he was always there to help.

He was proud of his work as a mentor on the Hill, and very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He had a sign on his desk that read: “I’m not perfect, I’m Norwegian, and that’s better.” And he was better than perfect, wonderfully human, deeply passionate, really fun and funny, often profanely so.

Chris was a beautiful, caring and dedicated public servant who made our lives and our country that much better. We miss him dearly, and it’s important to me, Chris’s family and friends, and the entire Hill family that we remember all he did.

Here’s my ask:

The LGBTQ Victory Institute’s Congressional Internship Program helps give talented young LGBTQ students their start on Capitol Hill and on a path towards a career in public service. The program provides students with stipends for housing and living expenses, as well as mentoring and help finding a rewarding placement. I can’t think of a better tribute to Chris’s life and his career than helping the Victory Institute build and expand their program, so a new generation of talented LGBTQ students can get a jump start in a career in public service.

I’ve made a contribution of $10,000 to help get this effort off the ground. Will you join me in building on Chris’s legacy and supporting aspiring LGBTQ public servants by making a donation of any amount to the Christopher Hoven Memorial Fund today?

Thank you for anything you’re able to give to celebrate Chris’s life and keep his legacy alive through the LGBTQ Victory Institute’s Congressional Internship program.

Sincerely,

Adam
