John,
Rampant oil and gas development has been threatening pronghorn habitat for years.
But today there is good news. President Joe Biden recently announced he is pausing oil and gas leasing across the millions of acres of our public lands, giving the Department of Interior time to evaluate the best ways to safeguard wildlife habitat, expand access for all Americans and leave our public lands better off than we found them.
This is where you come in, John: Tell your Senators and Representative to join in and support this common-sense pause from the reckless energy leasing of the past four years.
Pronghorn are fast, reaching speeds up to 60 miles per hour. They also travel great distances. In order to survive, they must migrate between summer and winter range to find food and for mating.
In recent years, these migration pathways have been threatened by unchecked energy development.
We deserve a balanced approach on our public lands that prioritizes wildlife and outdoor recreationists—not extractive industries. If you support this pause on oil and gas leasing, urge your members of Congress to do the same.
Our public lands could—and should—be better managed to protect pronghorn and other cherished wildlife.
Our current leasing system is broken. For example, lands that have virtually no potential for finding oil and gas are being leased to energy companies, at the ridiculously low price of $1.50 an acre. That land is then managed for oil and gas development, even though it has little chance of it.
Congress will have an important role to play in fixing this failed system. Several senators have already crafted legislation to correct some of these issues, but we need more support both in and outside Congress.
John, please let your U.S. Senators and Representative know that you want them to join you in supporting a balanced approach to our public lands so wildlife such as pronghorn can thrive for generations to come.
Thank you for lending your voice today for wildlife and the lands they call home.
