Team,
Back in July, I voted in support of D.C. statehood in the U.S. House -- and it passed! At the time, we didn’t have the majority in the Senate. But now, we have the majority. Which means we’re one step closer to ensuring the 700,000 residents of D.C. (more than Wyoming and Vermont) have the federal representation they deserve in Congress.
So, now that we’re this close to making D.C. statehood a reality, I wanted to hear your opinion: Do you support D.C. statehood?
D.C. residents are American citizens, pay the highest per-capita federal income taxes in the country (and more than the residents of 22 other states), serve in our military, and are some of the most engaged participants in American democracy. Yet, they are denied the right of self-governance and equal representation in the United States Congress. And with a majority black and brown population, D.C. statehood is also a matter of racial justice.
I believe it's long past time these taxpaying Americans receive the full benefits of federal representation. Do you agree that the District of Columbia should be the 51st state?
Thanks for your input!
