The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“Canada welcomes the agreement among representatives of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) to establish a new interim government and hold democratic elections in Libya in December 2021. This achievement is a critical step toward the political reconciliation and lasting stability that all Libyans deserve.
“The creation of a new three-person presidency council and government of national unity led by a prime minister builds upon the conclusions of the January 2020 Berlin Conference, which were endorsed by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2510 (2020).
“During this transitional period, we encourage all parties in Libya to pursue every effort to foster national unity. We also support the ongoing work of the Libyan Joint Military Commission to ensure that the terms of the Libyan ceasefire agreement are fully implemented.
“We commend the United Nations Support Mission in Libya for facilitating the LPDF, as well as the Libyan representatives for their efforts to establish an inclusive and unified government.”
