Elizabeth Warren is leading the charge to #CancelStudentDebt—an issue that matters to millions of Americans who are struggling to pay off their student loans, including me.

Elizabeth Warren Tweet: After the financial crisis, young people were shoved into a weak job market and plunged even deeper into student debt. Today, as they face layoffs and frozen wages in the wake of the pandemic, those barely staying afloat are now drowning. It’s time to #CancelStudentDebt.

Before I was even 18, my parents, teachers, and every adult in my life told me that if I wanted a future, I needed to go to college.

So I did. I applied to colleges the adults in my life viewed as “good” and “the best for my future” and took on a mountain of student debt because I felt I had no other choice.

Now, years out of college, I am buried under tens of thousands of dollars in loans.

Every day, I worry about making the monthly payments while also paying my rent and other bills. Before COVID, the amount I owed would grow as I sat worrying about how to pay it off.

My story isn’t unique.

Forty-three million Americans have some form of student loan debt, whether students who took out loans or their parents who took out parent plus loans because their children maxed out on federal aid and loans.

We’re in a crisis, and it’s time our elected leaders step in to help. That’s why I started with Fight for Progress in the first place. I wanted to help elect progressive leaders who would do what’s right, not what’s political.

And I’ll continue working until we get meaningful and progressive legislation that uplifts every single American, not just those of privilege.
