When my wife and I welcomed our first daughter into the world, she faced some health issues in those first few years. That meant we had to attend literally dozens of medical appointments.
I was lucky; at the time, I had an employer who allowed me to take time off to make sure our kiddo got all the care, love, and attention she needed to grow up happy and healthy. Sadly, most folks aren't so lucky. That's why guaranteeing paid family and medical leave is so important to me. Nobody should have to choose between their paycheck and the health of a loved one.
Today is the anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act becoming law. This essential legislation has granted certain workers unpaid leave after a birth or adoption, when caring for a family member, or in the event of the employee's own serious health condition.
This legislation was a step forward in 1993, but we remain the only developed nation without guaranteed paid leave. This shortcoming is hurting our families and the economy. It's time for Congress to step up. Join me in calling for mandated paid leave by signing the petition today.

Last December, bipartisan legislation that I sponsored passed through the House and Senate. That new law extended paid parental leave for all federal employees. That was progress, but we still have work to do, friend. All Americans should have family and medical leave.
For blue-collar and low-wage workers, paid family leave has always been an important issue. It's an essential right that unions, workers, and organizers have been pursuing for decades. And this issue is more important than ever during a pandemic that has upended so many people's lives. Simply put, folks shouldn't have to choose between their family's health and their paycheck.
