Bloomberg: “Buttigieg Vows to Work With Lawmakers on NYC-N.J. Gateway Tunnel”

This is a great sign of things to come -- President Joe Biden’s Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said he is committed to advancing the Gateway Tunnel project. 

There are hundreds of thousands of New Jersey commuters who depend on this critical infrastructure, but this commitment reaches far beyond my home state. It shows this administration's commitment to large scale infrastructure investment to build a stronger, cleaner economy.

The tunnels under the Hudson River and Portal Bridge are more than 100 years old. The tunnels are degrading after damage from Hurricane Sandy, and the Portal Bridge fails to close properly one of every seven times it opens.

I’ve been called “tunnel obsessed” because I’ve been fighting for Gateway since before I even entered Congress.

But with the Biden administration’s commitment to moving forward with Gateway, as well as a new funding agreement that has cleared the way for construction to begin on the new Portal North Bridge, we’re now on a path toward building a more modern, reliable, and safe transit system for New Jerseyans.
