Friend: COVID-19 vaccines may not be widely available yet, but wealthy countries have already purchased the vast majority of doses. Low-income countries have still received no doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine—the only vaccine with emergency approval from the World Health Organization—and could be waiting years for widespread distribution.
The patients and the communities we serve—some of the most vulnerable in the world—can’t afford to wait until then.
A pandemic that has already infected more than 100 million people around the world should not be an opportunity for pharmaceutical corporations to turn a profit. Companies received billions of dollars in taxpayer money to help fund the research and development of COVID-19 vaccines. The public should benefit from these investments.
Distribution of the vaccine is still in its early stages, but there may be many obstacles in the efforts to ensure access for the at-risk patients we serve around the world. As a new strain of COVID-19 spreads throughout countries in Southern Africa, health workers are completely overwhelmed as they struggle to treat escalating numbers of patients. Countries including Eswatini, Malawi, and Mozambique have yet to receive a single dose of the vaccine to protect those most at risk, including frontline health staff.
This pandemic requires a global spirit of solidarity if we hope to bring it under control. Doctors Without Borders has asked governments who have secured more doses than they need to vaccinate their high-risk groups to share their doses, so other countries can start vaccinating.
We’re ready for the challenges ahead, Friend, but can we count on your support?
