Under the auspices of "election integrity" and fighting "voter fraud" Republican legislators across the country are pushing forward new voting restrictions that they hope will undo all of the progress we have made in building a more inclusive, representative democracy. To be clear, we will push back on voter suppression anywhere and everywhere it is advanced.

“Democracy” is in our name. We will not let it happen.

In Georgia, Republicans are preparing to introduce legislation to ban automatic voter registration, ballot drop boxes, and no-excuse absentee voting and in Texas, the Republican Party is pushing to significantly roll back the number of early voting days.

Overall, Republicans have more than 150 laws working their way through local and state legislatures in an attempt to limit voting rights.

While we know this is nothing new because Republicans' only way to win is to stop people from voting, this year, they aren't even hiding their motivations.

Here’s what Alice O'Lenick, a Republican on the Gwinnett County Board of Elections in Georgia said about changing election laws:

"They don’t have to change all of them, but they’ve got to change the major parts of them so that we at least have a shot at winning."

Make no mistake about it, the increasingly authoritarian Republican Party will stop at nothing to undo all of the hard-fought victories DFA members have achieved so far.

We cannot sit back and wait to get involved until the midterm elections; by then it will be too late because the Republicans will have succeeded in tearing down the democratic reforms that make a reflective democracy possible.

We must continue pushing while we are ahead so we have the resources to beat back any and all efforts to restrict people from exercising their right to vote.

We have been fighting for years in states like Georgia to enfranchise voters, particularly young, progressive, and black and brown voters.

Make no mistake though, voter suppression tactics and laws used by elected Republicans, cost us the Governor's election in 2018. Thanks to the hard work of members and partner organizations on the ground, and despite nearly 200,000 voters purged from the rolls in 2020 alone, we were still able to engage enough voters to overcome Republican voter suppression tactics to flip the state blue.

Now, after such a bruising loss of the Presidency and control of the U.S. Senate, Republicans aren't taking those losses lying down. Instead, they are doubling down on their same old playbook... nationwide.
