Last night, Marjorie Taylor Greene — the racist seditionist who was elected to the United States House of Representatives last fall — was formally voted off any congressional committees on which she sat.
Here’s the thing:
Greene has openly, and repeatedly, indicated support for the assassination of prominent politicians — including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former President Barack Obama — and for “civil war 2.0.”
Yet only 11 of the 211 Republicans in the House acknowledged the obvious imperative and summoned the political courage to impose even a modest degree of accountability on Greene.
- Huge swaths of the Republican Party — its “base” along with a shocking number of its leaders in federal, state, and local government — have adopted white supremacy, demonization of the other, rank aggrievement at cultural change and social progress, willful ignorance and conspiratorial fantasy, denial of science and even basic realities, and “owning the libs” as the core of their political program.
- (They have other policy priorities to benefit billionaires and Big Business, but that’s not what they are talking about in public.)
- Some Republican politicians may (mostly) be making short-term political calculations (that could nonetheless have long-term severe consequences for our democracy).
- But many of them — like Green, and Trump, and countless others — are true believers.
- They are now — as they have been for decades — showing us who they are.
- As Maya Angelou famously advised, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
Marjorie Taylor Greene is the face of the Republican Party (such as it is) today.
She remains a danger to everyone who works on Capitol Hill, to the American people at large, and to the basic tenets of democracy — whether she’s on any congressional committees or not.
Join me in delivering a message to Marjorie Taylor Greene:
Any member of Congress who openly indicates support for violence against their colleagues and for civil war has no rightful claim to the honor of serving as a representative of the American people. You have repeatedly refused opportunities to disavow and apologize for your prior statements and actions. Trying to hide behind a “free speech” disguise yesterday, you failed to retract your indications of support for violence against Speaker Pelosi and other government officials. You failed to acknowledge that a democracy cannot function if elected officials fear for their own and their families’ safety. You have no place in the United States Congress. Resign now.
Add your name.
Thank you for taking action.
For democracy,

P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic. If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
