Friend, Endangered whales, magnificent dolphins and centuries-old deep-sea corals can be found in the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument off the coast of New England. This special and historic place was protected in 2016 to keep its amazing wildlife safe. But it was once again put at risk when the Trump administration took away its protections last year. The Biden administration is reviewing the Trump administration's decision to open this special place to fishing -- and it's crucial that we take this opportunity to encourage President Biden to restore protections for the region.1 Tell President Biden to restore the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. There's no place quite like the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. The monument includes rich ecosystems and underwater canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon. It also includes four seamounts, which are underwater mountains formed by volcanoes.2 This unique and otherworldly place is the first marine national monument established in the U.S. Atlantic Ocean -- which represented an important step toward protecting our oceans and marine life. But the Trump administration gutted protections for this region in June of 2020.3 Commercial fishing in the area puts protected species like sperm whales at risk of entanglements in fishing gear.4 Will you tell President Biden to restore this special marine monument? With a new administration in office, there is hope that the monument will be protected once again -- but we have to keep up our advocacy to reach our goal. To convince President Biden to restore protections to this beautiful place, it's vital that we show the Biden administration that there's strong public support for the monument.
