Friend,

When I first took office as Attorney General, I made a promise to Massachusetts families hurt by the opioid epidemic that I would never stop fighting. Today, I’m proud to announce a step forward in the fight to hold the people who created and profited from the opioid epidemic accountable.

We’ve secured a $573 million settlement with one of the world’s largest consulting firms – McKinsey & Company – for their role in Purdue Pharma’s campaign to promote OxyContin and profit off an epidemic that kills 2,000 people in Massachusetts each year.

Help us spread the word that we will hold the perpetrators of the opioid crisis accountable by sharing this social media post. >>> [link removed]

McKinsey was well aware of the dangers of opioids, yet they met with the Sackler family and proposed “turbocharged” plans to drastically increase OxyContin sales. They knew what they were doing. They knew the devastation that the opioid epidemic was inflicting on our friends, families, and communities, but they continued to line their own pockets.

Now, they’re paying up. Massachusetts will receive $13 million from the settlement, with most of the funds going to the state’s newly created Opioid Recovery and Remediation Fund to expand equitable access to treatment, prevention, and recovery efforts. This settlement money is going directly to those most harmed by this crisis.

It was also important to ensure transparency. McKinsey will be required to turn over tens of thousands of documents for the public to see in an online repository, so there can be no doubt about what McKinsey did.

This fight is far from over. Far too many lives are still being destroyed by substance use disorder, and COVID-19 has exacerbated the disproportionate impact on communities of color. My team will continue to work day in and day out to secure justice and accountability. You have my word.

Thanks for all you do,
Maura
