We all know how unjust our criminal justice system can sometimes be. Last week, I filed legislation to right the wrong done to a man wrongfully incarcerated for 37 years. But, there's much more that needs to be done to recognize the hidden traps, injustices, and tools that perpetuate inequality.
That's why, today I am announcing that I've filed HB-565, a bill that gets to the bottom of our state's fines and fees system. Along with Senator Darryl Rouson's companion bill, this important piece of legislation will create a commission to study what's working and what's not working in our existing system and offer solutions for how to make our system work better for everyone.
This diverse council will be made up of lawmakers, criminal justice folks, and community members from organizations like Operation New Hope and the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition. Together, they will conduct a full examination of the fines and fees system to see the extent of the problems.
Floridians deserve to know the criminal justice system is working. While it is important to hold wrong doers accountable, we cannot allow minority and low income communities to be unfairly targeted.
