Friend,

As a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I’ve had my share of briefings about anti-democratic elements seeking to undermine the will of the people through violence and intimidation. The recent, disturbing developments in Burma, for example, come to mind.

The United States has stood confidently on the international stage as a force for good for decades — and as a beacon for democracy both at home and abroad. Donald Trump, though, did more than any other US leader in history to erode that credibility and trust.

His obsession with overturning the rightful election of President Biden is a clear example. Think about the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6th. When our allies — and adversaries — see this, it calls into question our commitment to free and fair elections, the peaceful transition of power, basic human rights and the post-World War II international order we helped establish.

Donald Trump willfully encouraged a violent, extremist mob to overturn the will of the American people and disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. He attacked our nation’s very democracy. It was scary and it was disgusting. We strongly condemn the attack and we will work hard to make sure that it never happens again.

In the coming days and weeks, our country will continue to pick up the pieces and rebuild from the disastrous aftermath of the Trump presidency.

President Biden is already helping turn the page. Rejoining the Paris Agreement on Climate and the World Health Organization is a strong start, and we’re just getting warmed up.

We’ve got a lot of work to do, team. It won’t be easy, but with this movement by our side, I’m confident that we will restore America’s status as a global leader and reliable force for good.

Be well,

Ami
