More guns were sold last month than almost any other month on record. This is the continuation of a trend that we’ve been keeping an eye on since early last year: gun sales have been skyrocketing throughout the pandemic.
Meanwhile, gun violence continues to surge. This week has given us a number of horrifying, and unfortunately, all too common, examples of tragedies caused by guns.
In Florida, two FBI agents were killed and three others were injured while serving a warrant. In Oklahoma, five children and one adult were shot and killed in a home. A dispute over snow shoveling left three people dead in Pennsylvania. And in San Diego, a high school teacher was shot and killed by a man who had been stalking the teacher’s fiancé.
People often buy guns because they think that guns will make them safer, but the truth is that owning a gun makes you more likely to be a victim of gun violence, not less. At Giffords Law Center, we’re working to educate the public and to draft and pass legislation that will make all Americans safer and counter the NRA’s reckless and false narrative that more guns will lead to less gun violence.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel of this pandemic. Unfortunately, our return to “normal” will mean a return to a society with an ever-growing number of firearms in untrained hands.
